Earthing, EMC & Lightning Protection Engineer in Nuclear Power Plants

Since 2023, in my position as an Electrical Engineer at Edvance, a key part of the EDF Groupin Lyon, France, I am significantly involved in the EPR2 project, a cutting-edge initiative in nuclear power technology. The EPR2 project, located at the Penly site in France, represents a major advancement in nuclear reactor design and operation. This project aims to build upon the successes of previous European Pressurized Reactors (EPR), focusing on enhanced efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability.

My responsibilities within this project are multifaceted, critical, and crucial for ensuring the electrical safety and operational integrity of the EPR2 nuclear power plant. A key aspect of my work includes identifying and analyzing areas prone to lightning strikes, where I devise and implement specialized protection strategies to fortify these zones against such high-impact incidents.

Furthermore, I am tasked with the essential responsibility of establishing and maintaining robust earthing systems. By ensuring effective grounding connections for both electrical and non-electrical systems and equipment, I significantly enhance the safety and stability of the plant's infrastructure. This facet of my role is crucial in reducing electrical risks and promoting a secure working environment.

Another area where I apply my expertise is in the formulation and execution of comprehensive Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) strategies. This encompasses ensuring the seamless operation of electrical and non-electrical equipment within the plant without mutual interference, as well as their qualification in adherence to international EMC standards. My position is instrumental in upholding the operational integrity of the plant, protecting against electromagnetic disturbances, and verifying that all equipment conforms to the stringent safety and operational norms required in such a critical environment.

Cable System Expert

From 2021 to 2023, in my role as a Cable Expert at France Energies Marines in Plouzané, France specializing in subsea power cables for floating offshore wind farms, I have led significant projects for esteemed organizations such as TotalEnergies, EDF, RTE, and Ifremer, while also collaborating with academic institutions like the University of Nantes, University of Gustave Eiffel, and ENSTA Bretagne. In this role, I focused particularly on dynamic submarine cables, a specialized type of cable designed to transmit electric power and other signals under the sea. These cables are uniquely engineered to withstand the movement and stress caused by waves, currents, and floating platforms, making them essential for connecting offshore installations, such as wind farm platforms. This multifaceted position has enabled me to develop a comprehensive skill set. My responsibilities have encompassed everything from detailed cable condition evaluations to managing complex project lifecycles. In doing so, I have honed my expertise in areas such as comprehensive reporting and analysis, effective communication, adept project management, meticulous documentation, strategic stakeholder engagement, robust risk management, and judicious budget oversight. These skills have been integral in driving innovation in subsea power cable systems, ensuring their reliability and resilience in challenging marine environments.

Key Objectives and Contributions:

  1. Cable Condition Assessments: Conducting exhaustive evaluations of cable conditions, focusing on mechanical, thermal, environmental, and primarily electrical failures in dynamic subsea power cables for floating offshore wind farms.
  2. Benchmarking Monitoring Technologies: Benchmarking various monitoring technologies across industries, offering insights for adapting and enhancing these for dynamic subsea power cable monitoring.
  3. Preventive Maintenance Technologies: Recommending advanced preventive maintenance technologies for real-time monitoring to prevent cable failures and enhance accessory reliability.
  4. Technology Evaluation at EDF R&D: Evaluating the efficiency and applicability of key technologies at EDF R&D laboratories.
  5. Financial Impact Analysis: Estimating the potential impact of monitoring strategies on the Capital Expenditure (CapEx) and Operational Expenditure (OpEx) of wind farms.
